Okay so this is kinda one of my first attempts at writing apart from the Bookshop, so it's a bit like a book foetus (Laurens words not mine). I thought I should share it with you guys. So I guess enjoy...
‘Can you be mine, forever?’
I was crying again as I watched the best love story unfold again and again. This had to be the third time I had watched this movie today and I had not stopped crying. Here’s the thing about rom-coms once you watch them you can’t stop. You get this idea that the world is a fantastical, romantical place, then you step outside and remember how cruel and sinister it is. The only way to prevent this soul-crushing realisation is to continue to fill your life with every fake romantical thing you can think of. To spend every spare moment imagining your life is a Hugh Grant movie. At least, that’s what works for me. See without all these romantical fantasies my life would be sensationally boring. These fantasies and ideals give me a sense of control. Like I can be a fierce seductress, wooing all those you gaze upon her, only to fall for some poor farm boy who sees past my gorgeous exterior to my smart witty personality; and not some lonely bookworm with 3 friends, two of whom are cats.
Its that exact thought I’m contemplating as I walk down my school hallway when my one human friend comes floating over,
‘Tell me you didn’t spend all weekend with your cats again?’ she sings, see Evie is one of those people you can’t help but like. She just has one of those personalities, it still surprises me after fours years of friendship that she actually wants to be seen with me. I give my best attempt to lie ‘No I didn’t actually.’ It didn’t work, at all.
‘You Maya, are a terrible liar,’ she said with a grin, linking my arm through hers and beginning to skip down that hallway, like actually skip, in a public place full of judgemental people.
See Evie like me loves everything romantical, but she also has the talent of seeing something lovely in everything, it’s kind of sweet. While I see the world as a burning mess and take refuge in rom-coms, Evie sees the world as a rom-com and takes inspiration from the movies. I half-heartedly start to skip with her, maybe if I act like Evie I can see the world as she does.
